The Beishan “broadcast wall” as a site of artistic investigation. This project is a site-specific interdisciplinary project dedicated to the Beishan Broadcast Station of the Kinmen Island, Taiwan. The starting point of the project is the notorious Beishan “broadcast wall”, a construction that was erected on the Beishan cliff, facing the see and Mainland China 6.4km away. The Broadcast Wall is a three-story-high concrete structure holding 48 loudspeakers that were used to broadcast propaganda messages across the Taiwan Strait to Mainland China until the late 1970s. The broadcast wall is part of the Guningtou War Museum and is accessible to the public (the only one out of 4 other broadcast walls spread out on the Kinmen and Matsu islands). It stands directly on the site of the battle of Guningtou, an historical event of high significance in Taiwanese history, as it laid the foundation for the current relationship between the two parts of China. One of the “voices” of the broadcast walls was the iconic Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng whose songs, punctuated by spoken messages were used to seduce listening bystanders across the water. Besides the specificity of the site, the artists will engage with the people from Kinmen; with professional and non-professional musicians, with witnesses of history and with the Kinmen youth. The Kinmen Country Choir will for instance be part of the project, presenting its own repertoire but also becoming involved through collaborations with the artists. This will result in a “concert-exhibition” presented on-site, at the picturesque Beishan cliff, combining visual art, music and performance. Continuing from the residency result in Kinmen... The project does not directly address war or political issues. The broadcast wall may play a protagonist role as a sonic and architectural device, but within a global creative ecology and a clearly defined priority: to cross the boundaries between artistic genres and to foster interconnections between different people through music, art and performance.
